Manhattan Breast Augmentation
Findings of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons show that breast augmentation is the third most commonly performed cosmetic operation in the United States and in 2005 two hundred and ninety one thousand such cosmetic surgical procedures were completed. During surgery, prosthesis is inserted into the breast cavity in order to enlarge the size of the breast, either for solely cosmetic reasons or for reconstruction after a mastectomy. Many of these surgical procedures were executed here in Manhattan. Breast augmentation can implant two different kinds of prosthesis – the implants can either be filled with a sterile saline liquid or they can be silicone filled implants that are filled with a viscous silicone gel.
Research has shown that those women who are looking to have breast augmentation procedures performed are normally young, healthy and from a high socio-economic group that the rest of the population in Manhattan. Breast augmentation studies also show that such women have generally low levels of self esteem and high incidences of depression. Surveys done on the post operative patients show an increase in self confidence, social life and better self esteem after completion of the procedure. The majority of such patients are extremely happy with the results of the operation even when complications resulting in follow up operations may have arisen.
In Manhattan, breast augmentation is most commonly executed using saline-filled implants as a result of restrictions currently placed on the silicone prostheses but these are rarely used in other countries. Although good results are obtained compared to the silicone implants the saline ones are more likely to result in such problems as wrinkling or ripping under the skin.
Silicone implants do not last a lifetime and most patients will need at least one replacement surgery during their lives. Rupture of the external sac of the implant is one reason for repeat surgery and the causes of this can be damage during the implanting procedure itself, a blow to the chest area and very often the pressure caused during a routine mammogram. Manhattan breast augmentation patients are carefully counselled as to what post operative care should be taken to protect their implants be they saline or silicone. In the event of a silicone implant rupture, the implants do not deflate but the silicone can leak out into the cavity surrounding the prosthesis with the potential to migrate to other parts of the body so it is necessary to remove the implant.
Among complications that can occur, and every woman contemplating have this procedure done needs to be informed about these, include post operative bleeding or haematoma, fluid collection, possible infection of the surgical area and breast pain. Long term problems reported in Manhattan breast augmentation patients include loss of nipple sensitivity, visible wrinkling of the implants and problems with breast feeding.
